'Too early' - Blunt Darwin Nunez claim made by compatriot amid Liverpool prediction

Uruguayan manager Gus Poyet believes Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez made the move to the Premier League "too early", but he backs the Reds number 27 to become an "incredible striker".

Former Chelsea star Poyet highlighted how the red card Nunez received in the draw with Crystal Palace didn't allow his adaption to the league to be "smooth".

Nunez started the win over Manchester City on the bench after scoring in the 7-1 win at Rangers in the Champions League, but caused the City defence huge problems with his running power after making his introduction in the second half at Anfield.

Poyet told Safe Betting Sites : "He didn’t allow himself a smooth adaptation to the league. The red card meant suddenly everybody was on top of him.

"He made a huge mistake with that headbutt [against Crystal Palace] and he's been under the microscope ever since. There are certain decisions where I question him - for example against City, he decided to shoot when he had a chance to pass and he didn't.

"Nunez might have moved to England too early in his career. Liverpool need to start playing better as a team, but I think he has all the attributes to be an incredible striker.”

The Uruguayan thinks Liverpool's win over City should be the spark needed to ignite the Reds' patchy season so far.

“Given the fight for the title between Liverpool and Man City over the past few seasons, this win should spark Liverpool's season," Poyet added. "It was important for Liverpool to get that result - if they lost, they would not be in contention anymore for the title.”
