Tony Weston in Rangers return as Partick Thistle loan exit reason revealed by Ian McCall

Rangers youngster Tony Weston has returned to the club from Partick Thistle.

The 19-year-old made the switch to the Scottish Championship promotion hopefuls in July and made his debut the following the day in the Premier Sports Cup against Premiership new boys Kilmarnock. He's featured 18 times in total for the Jags, with 17 of those appearances coming from the bench.

He found the net on one occasion for Ian McCall's side with a strike in the Scottish Cup win over Kelty Hearts. Thistle were keen to keep the Rangers striker on board for the remainder of the campaign but with opportunities limited, he has decided to move on and search for regular first-team football elsewhere.

McCall said: “Tony is a very talented young player and I’m disappointed to see him leave. Admittedly, he probably hasn’t has as many opportunities as he’s deserved this season and for a player at his age, it’s important to be playing.

“We left it up to him because we’d have been happy to keep a hold of him but he’s decided to leave and look for regular football elsewhere. As well as being a good player, he’s a great lad who is well-liked here at Firhill and we all wish him the best going forward.”

A club statement read: "Partick Thistle FC can today confirm that Tony Weston has returned to Rangers with immediate effect.

"The 19-year-old forward arrived on loan from the cinch Premiership side in July, making his debut a day after signing against Kilmarnock in the Premier Sports Cup.

"He has featured 18 times in Thistle colours with 17 of those coming off the bench. He scored one goal during his time as a Jag, the third in a 3-0 win over Kelty Hearts at Firhill in the Scottish Cup.

"Tony heads back to Ibrox with the best wishes of everyone at the club."
