Bailey Wright has returned to Sunderland after suffering a season-ending injury while on loan at Championship strugglers Rotherham United. The Australia international limped out of the Millers' 3-1 Good Friday home win against West Bromwich Albion.
There were initial fears that Wright may have broken his leg, but Tony Mowbray confirmed this afternoon that there was no break however the 30-year-old had instead sustained serious ankle ligament damage. Wright was back at the Academy of Light today and was seen wearing a protective plastic boot.
"Bailey has a protective boot on – we think he's injured his ankle ligaments quite badly unfortunately," said Mowbray. "He's likely to be out for six to eight weeks, so he won't play again this season.

"We'd expect Bailey to be back [pre-season] training with us in June."
Wright was in and out of the Sunderland team in the first half of the season, and he joined Rotherham on loan on deadline day in January for the remainder of the campaign. He made eight appearances for the South Yorkshire side, including six starts, helping the Millers stay out of the relegation zone and they are currently four points above the bottom three.
Wright is under contract with Sunderland until the summer of 2024.
