Tony McGregor rants and memorable moments following Volodymyr Zelensky criticism

Tony McGregor took aim at Volodymyr Zelensky over the weekend after the Ukrainian President criticised his son over a picture of the UFC star with Vladimir Putin.

The Notorious met the Russian leader at the 2018 World Cup final in Moscow and gifted Putin a bottle of his Proper 12 Whiskey before posing for a photo with him.

Sharing the image on Instagram, McGregor described Putin as 'one of the greatest leaders of our time', a post which has not aged well following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Mr Zelensky claimed that McGregor is not being supportive of Ukraine, which led to Tony taking to Instagram to fire back at him.

The former two-weight champion's dad mimicked the words from the infamous Academy Awards encounter between Will Smith and Chris Rock earlier in the year and said: "Keep my son's name out yo f***ing mouth."

Tony also shared a number of photos of Putin with famous figures such as US President Joe Biden and U2 frontman Bono without captions.

It's far from the first time Tony has made headlines over the years. Here's some of his most memorable moments:

Coinage

The only place to start is with Tony's bizarre 'coinage' rant from the summer of 2018.

The Lucan native was left bemused as he was handed €17.30 in change from a 'crisp' €20 note when he bought his train ticket.

Problems ensued however when the father of three revealed that there was no space for such 'coinage' in his custom made Hugo Boss suit.

He said: “When I got to Lansdowne Road station I tendered a brand new crisp €20 note into the automatic machine looking for a single ticket to Dun Laoighaire."

“They had the bloody cheek to give me back coinage, €17.30, and a miserable little one-way ticket.

“They gave me all that coinage. I have no room to put those coins anywhere. I wear a slim-fit, hand-fitted Hugo Boss suit.”

As thousands watched his rant, the internet sprung into action, and a GoFundMe page was even set up to get Tony a leap card!

Driving around Ballina in a Lamborghini

Earlier this year, Tony flashed his wealth as he drove around the County Mayo town of Ballina in a €324,000 Lamborghini Aventador.

He stopped to chat to locals outside a hairdressers before posing for a snap inside the luxury sports car.

Sharing photos on his Instagram story, the Dubliner wrote: "The Ballina crew."

Rescued by RNLI

Tony describes himself as an "international yachtsman of leisure", but he was left red-faced last summer when he had to be rescued by the RNLI after his luxury yacht wouldn’t start while out at sea.

Tony got into difficulty out in the water after the batteries went dead on the yacht while he was out at Dalkey’s Pilot View in Dublin.

He explained: “It was a captain’s error. I went out to Dalkey to Pilot View. I dropped an anchor and I had swimmers on board. They were swimming off the 188. So they were swimming and jumping off the cliffs there for about an hour and a half.

“I dropped the anchor, and I switched the engines off, but I put on the navigation lights and that was the problem. My navigation lights were running the batteries down.

“So, when I went to pull up the anchor, the anchor was on an electric wince, I went to pull up the anchor there was no power. The electric wince wasn’t working – so I knew there was an electrical issue, but I didn’t know at the time I drained the batteries.”

He added: “No one could come to my assistance, so I put in the call to the Dublin Coastguard. They notified Dún Laoghaire RNLI and they sent out the all-weather lifeboat team.”

Blasts Khabib

Tony's son is the king of trash talking in the UFC, but the former taxi driver also got involved in such antics in the build-up to Conor's 2018 fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Tony claimed the Russian had "no honour and no respect" and that he would be "held accountable" for that.

He told The Irish Sun: “I don’t take it personal. Press conferences are what they are. It's water off a duck’s back to me but this is coming from a man who has no honour and no respect. He will be held accountable for that on October 6.

“I expect that sort of thing at press conferences. My son will settle the score on October 6.”

Of course Tony got his prediction wrong as Nurmagomedov defeated the Notorious via submission in the fourth round of their bout.

Films himself shaving his own hair

Many people were left to attempt cutting their own hair during lockdown as barbers and hairdressers were forced shut by the government's restrictions - and Tony was no different.

He shared a video of himself shaving his own hair ahead of his son's fight with Dustin Poirier in January of last year.

Tony filmed himself shaving off his locks while listening to 'The Show Must Go On' by Queen.

He has since revealed that he has underwent hair surgery.

Photo with Kanye

Following Conor's 2016 win over Nate Diaz, Tony was all smiles as he posed for a photo with Kanye West backstage.

His daughter Erin shared the happy pic on Instagram, where she wrote: "Go Tony!"

MMA journalist Ariel Helwani described the photo as his "highlight of the night".

He tweeted at the time: "Highlight of the night: the legend Tony McGregor, Conor's dad, taking a picture backstage with Kanye West."
