Former West Ham United and England striker Tony Cottee says winger Said Benrahma must start after his crucial goal against Brentford in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Benrahma came off the bench with 21 minutes to go against his former side in the third round of the FA Cup and ten minutes later netted a stunning 25-yard strike to seal a 1-0 win and a trip to League One side Derby County in the fourth round for West Ham.
Benrahma’s goal from the bench is his sixth of the season, making him the Hammers’ second top scorer in all competitions in 2022/23.

Of that six, three have come in the Premier League, making him the club’s joint-top scorer in the top-flight, as well as the scorer of the only goal in the FA Cup, with the other two coming in the Europa Conference League. Despite that scoring run, Benrahma has found himself on the bench for each of the last two matches against Brentford and the 2-2 draw with Leeds United in the Premier League.
Speaking after Benrahma’s superb winner at the Gtech Community Stadium, Cottee, whose career saw him score 145 times for West Ham across two spells between 1982 and 1996, feels that Benrahma has to start against relegation-threatened rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday in the Premier League.
“Hopefully that goal gives Benrahma the start he deserves in the next league,” stated Cottee on Twitter. “What a finish that was.”
Benrahma’s three goals and one assist in the Premier League have come in 16 league appearances this season, despite starting only nine league matches.
