Australia’s boyfriend Tony Armstrong has big career news — he’s left his role at ABC News Breakfast. And boy, I bet he is gunning for a sleep-in.
Although there had been whispers that Tony would be leaving the national broadcaster for a while now, it hadn’t been confirmed until the Gold Logie nominee confirmed the goss on the program Tuesday morning.
“I’ve been pretty nervous about doing this,” Armstrong began, saying before announcing that he was retiring from ABC News Breakfast.
“I just want to thank Brekky and the broader ABC News team for welcoming me in with open arms and helping me grow over the past few years. It feels like I’ve been on a bit of a rocket ship.
“I’m going to miss the couch. Not the alarm, but I’ll miss the couch. And, yeah, I’ve had such a ball. I’m going to miss everyone but, um, yeah. You’ll still see me around.”
Although Tony’s colleagues were happy to see what he would be getting up to next, they noted that they were sad to see him go.
“I am so sorry three years of talking sport and swapping gags with Tony is about to end,” co-host Michael Rowland said.
“He is an engaging colleague and a good friend. In fact, there’s no one I would rather sit through an earthquake with. We did. Google it.”
Bridget Brennan said that Tony added the “sparkle” to ABC News Breakfast.
“How blessed we’ve been to have Tone on our screens every morning, bringing the sparkle, joy and heart that only Tony can!” she said.
“Tony is a wonderful friend and everyone at News Breakfast is going to miss his infectious and caring nature. I know it’s meant so much to me and to thousands upon thousands of First Nations viewers waking up to see Tony representing us on the daily.”
After the show finished airing, Armstrong posted a photo to Instagram of him and his colleagues sitting on the iconic News Breakfast set.
“Plenty more people to thank and I’ll do that next week, but that’s it for me at NBK,” the proud Gamilaroi man wrote.
“Looking forward to whatever comes next! Thanks to these amazing on-air teammates for making the mornings SOMEWHAT bearable.”
Although this is the end for Tony at ABC News Breakfast, he’ll still be the host of a brand new ABC show that is yet to be announced in 2025. His final day on ABC News Breakfast is October 4.
Tony kicked off his career at the ABC as a fill-in sports presenter. But after being so goddamn good at it, he took on the role full-time from 2020. In 2022, he won the Logie Award for the best new talent. In 2024, he was nominated for the Gold Logie for most popular television personality and won Icon Of The Year at the PEDESTRIAN TELEVISION Awards.
I think I speak for all of us when I say that I can’t wait to see what he does next!
