Tonight's rugby news as Jamie Roberts backs Wales to stun Six Nations with Gatland plan

Here are the latest rugby headlines on Saturday, January 21.

Wales have 'great shot' at Six Nations title

Jamie Roberts believes Wales have a "great shot" at winning the Six Nations title in the coming weeks.

The former centre says Warren Gatland's return will give a talented group of players the identity they need to take on the likes of France and Ireland.

He told ITV on Saturday: "It's great to see him [Gatland] back. There's something about this Six Nations, I'm really quietly confident. Wales have had a hugely disappointing calendar year but Warren comes back, hugely experienced, great win percentage in the Six Nations. What you will get with Warren is a real identity about how Wales play. I played under him for a long time, I know the way he wins, I know the way he operates and the way he wants to play.

"Do you know what? I think he has a great group of players. A lot of people have concerns around the strength in depth in Wales but if he has everyone fit he has got a great shot at the title."

Scarlets discover opponents

The Scarlets sealed top spot in Pool B of the Challenge Cup with a comfortable 20-7 away win over Bayonne that maintained their 100 per cent record in the competition. The result, coupled with Cardiff's 37-24 defeat in Brive, means the French side will now visit Parc y Scarlets in the last 16.

Cardiff could face one of a number of teams in their home last 16 match, depending on results this weekend.

Dwayne Peel's side were rarely troubled in France, with tries from Jonathan Davies, Joe Roberts and Steff Evans helping them to a victory free of jeopardy.

Cardiff, meanwhile, were overpowered but had already guaranteed a home knockout tie.

England star now Six Nations doubt

Northampton flanker Courtney Lawes limped off in the 29th minute of the 31-13 defeat to La Rochelle in the Heineken Champions Cup to put in doubt his participation in this season's Six Nations.

Lawes has been beset with injuries of late and if he is ruled out it will be a serious blow to England's chances of a successful campaign.

The loss of Lawes completed a miserable afternoon for Saints, as centre Fraser Dingwall was sent off for a high challenge just 10 minutes after Lawes had left the field and lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto also received a red card in the dying moments.

With these two key departures, Saints had no chance of competing with the reigning champions so they fell to their fourth defeat in the competition, which left them rooted to the bottom of Pool B with just a single point.

Quins into knockouts

Harlequins took advantage of crisp conditions to end their victory drought with a 39-29 win against the Sharks that propels them into the Heineken Champions Cup knockout phase.

Danny Care celebrated his 350th appearance for Quins with a try and there were also touch downs for Alex Dombrandt, Cadan Murley, Stephan Lewies and Nick David in a comfortable bonus-point triumph.

The 2021 Gallagher Premiership champions revelled in the sunshine at Twickenham Stoop to continue the revival begun against Racing 92 a week earlier, clinching their first victory since December 18.

They led 21-8 in the first 20 minutes alone and having faced a spirited comeback from a Sharks team featuring South Africa stars Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Ox Nche and Lukhanyo Am, they accelerated clear once more in the third quarter.
