Tommy Tiernan's RTE replacement confirmed after chat show wraps for season

RTE bosses have decided what will fill the slot left vacant by The Tommy Tiernan Show this Saturday night after the popular chat show wrapped for the season.

The Tommy Tiernan Show went out with a bang last weekend, with the stand-up comedian causing a stir on social media with his interview with WWE superstar Becky Lynch and welcoming singing legend Dolores Keane on for a heartfelt chat about loneliness and alcoholism. Doug Allan also joined the show, which was closed out by a musical performance from The Murder Capital.

Fans of Tommy will have to buy tickets for one of his stand-up gigs if they are to fill their Tiernan fix over the coming months, however, because as well as the end of the chat show's season, the 53-year-old has also announced that he's taking a break from his hit podcast to focus on his upcoming comedy dates.

With The Tommy Tiernan Show being one of RTE's most reliable sources of ratings every week, the national broadcaster can expect a bit of a dip this weekend because in the talk show's place will be an action movie starring Tom Cruise.

After the Nine O'Clock news on RTE One on Saturday night will be Mission: Impossible - Fallout, the sixth instalment in the spy action franchise, which will take viewers up to midnight.

No return date has been announced for The Tommy Tiernan Show but it's almost certain to be renewed for several more seasons as it's been one of the most popular shows on RTE television since it first aired in 2017 with its unique premise of the host not knowing his guests before they join him on stage.

Tommy has established himself as such a captivating interviewer that he remains one of the public's favourites to take over The Late Late Show hosting duties when Ryan Tubridy leaves his post in May.

Given his hectic touring schedule, however, Tommy would be unlikely to accept the gig and bookmakers still consider Claire Byrne the front-runner to take The Late Late Show role.
