Tommy Tiernan has viewers in fits of laughter with closing comment to Colm O'Rourke

Tommy Tiernan welcomed Meath GAA manager Colm O'Rourke on to his RTE show on Saturday night as the pair discussed a wide ranging number of topics.

O'Rourke won two All-Irelands as a player, as well as five Leinster titles, three national leagues and was also named on the All-Star team on three occasions.

But it was through his role as a geography teacher in St Patrick's Classical School in Navan, where he later became principal, that O'Rourke met a young Tiernan.

During the interview, Tiernan asked O'Rourke if he had many crises in his life, with the Meath boss responding: "I've had a pretty boring life. I grew up in a big family, went to school, had no interest in school whatsoever.

"I was very single minded in I wanted to have success as a footballer and I think that maybe at the cost of a lot of other things."

He added: "I'm competitive, I want to see Meath winning or any team I'd be involved with. My competitiveness now in the last 20 years has been to see other people doing well.

"Obviously we measure ourselves with Dublin, you measure if you're good enough to play at Croke Park and not just beat them. That is something I'd like to see coming back."

And Tiernan's final comment to O'Rourke left people in fits of laughter as the comedian said: "I wish one day when you where throwing me out of your class, I’d have said one day you will be on my chat show."

A number of viewers took to social media to have their say on the interview.

One person wrote: "Such a funny interview"

Another tweeted: "Great show. Needed that laugh."

Someone else said: "Refreshing interview, bit of craic & very enjoyable!! What good entertainment should be about…"

One other added: "Fantastic chat between Tommy Tiernan & Colm O Rourke his former teacher, who put him out of class once or twice. Great rapport & equally witty. Great to see this side of Colm O Rourke. He comes across as quite serious on Sports programme. Not a bit of it here. He was very funny."

"Great interview between past Principal Teacher and past pupil, im sure there were many many more stories that could have been mentioned with Tommy and Hector having been past pupils, can you imagine the chaos in the classroom," read another.
