Tommy Tiernan defends controversial Amy Huberman sex life question

Tommy Tiernan has defended asking Amy Huberman about her sex life on his talk show earlier this year.

The comedian interviewed Amy on The Tommy Tiernan show back in February, and brought up the topic of sex which led to 15 complaints to RTE. Amy, who is married to rugby star Brian O'Driscoll, seemed well able for the question however many viewers were unimpressed.

"Without incriminating the people that we live with, I wonder could we talk about sex?" the 53-year-old comedian asked. Tommy went on to ask how her relationship with "physical intimacy" had changed from her 20s to her 40s, through marriage and motherhood.

There was an awkward pause, and Tommy then jumped in, saying: "If it's an unfair question Amy, we can leave it." Amy continued to answer the question and spoke about the importance of physical touch in a relationship, without going into any personal details.

Tommy has now defended his line of questions in an interview with the RTE Guide. When asked if the backlash was justified, he replied: "Not in the slightest."

“I asked Father Brian Darcy about sex. I asked 70-year-old Bob Geldof about sex. I’ve asked countless people about a subject that is an integral part of all of our lives, and just because a bunch of idiots take exception to me asking a woman about sex… I mean really? If you steer your ship by their star, you’ll very quickly end up shipwrecked,” he added.

At the time, people complained on Twitter saying the "rare misstep" was "awkward to watch." Another person tweeted: "Mildly uncomfortable personal question from Tommy!"

In other Tommy Tiernan news, the podcaster and actor has announced dates for his stand-up gig in Dublin for 2023. The host of RTE One's 'Tommy Tiernan's Epic West' will perform in Vicar Street on March 18 and 19, and April 13-16 2023.

Tickets for next year's gigs go on sale tomorrow Wednesday 14 at 10am. Tickets start from €35 and can be bought on www.ticketmaster.ie
