Tommy Fury has been "underpaid" despite £2.5million purse for Jake Paul fight

Tommy Fury's dad believes his son has been underpaid for his fight with Jake Paul despite his rival claiming he will earn a £2.5million purse.

The British star was set to meet YouTube star Paul on two separate occasions but was forced to pull out of their first fight with a broken rib, before being banned from travelling to the US for their scheduled meeting last August. The pair will now trade blows in Saudi Arabia on Sunday week.

During talks, several public claims were made on social media including from Paul who suggested his rival was offered around £2.5m to accept the fight. The fight had looked in doubt, with Fury allegedly unhappy with his treatment during negotiations and threatened to walk away.

But now Fury's father John has claimed that the star was desperate to get the deal over the line, with their rivalry no longer about just financial reward. “We have probably been well underpaid, the money is one thing but if he knocks Jake spark out the world is his oyster," Fury Sr told Mirror Fighting courtesy of FreeBets.com when discussing how a breakthrough was made in negotiations. "Tommy will be a very popular man come February 26, I can guarantee that.”

It was unclear exactly where the fight would take place with offers understood to be made from promoter Global Titans to stage the contest. Paul looked at one point as if he may once again move on from the clash in pursuit of alternative clashes against either Nate Diaz or bare-knuckle fighter Mike Perry, but Paul and Fury will now clash in Saudi Arabia.

And Fury Sr previously revealed that he advised his son to walk away in pursuit of alternative challenges in order to prevent further delay to his career. “You could offer him [Paul] a million dollars, he doesn’t want to fight Tommy," he said. "He just wants to wear the Fury name out from his brand. I’ve said to Tommy, we are going to move on ‘don’t do any more tweets or anything else’. "There is other big people we can talk to, they need to give Tommy what he is worth. He [Paul] is the A-side to absolutely jack s***.

"He is A-side to jumping off bridges and filming daft stuff for viewing figures. Listen, I'm afraid it is going to be the fight that never happens. Tommy is a fighting man, he is trained to fight anybody. He is doing really well. If others can’t see the potential in Tommy, they need to go Specsavers. I am just sick of talking about that coward I was not interested in."
