Tomiyasu and Smith Rowe rested, rare Chambers start - Arsenal predicted lineup against Burnley

The last time Arsenal played a Premier League match they had two chances of claiming a piece of silverware this season.

But following the 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester City on New Year's Day, the Gunners have crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Championship outfit Nottingham Forest and denied a place in the Carabao Cup final by Liverpool.

With no Europe this season it means Arsenal are not in any cup competition and it's only the end of January.

Although there is a chance that the north London outfit's 2021/22 will end in some sort of success as a top-four finish is very much a possibility.

Starting with the visit of Burnley to the Emirates Stadium this afternoon, Mikel Arteta's side have 18 games left of the season and they're all in the Premier League.

And with the top-four picture changing every few days, the Spaniard knows the importance of picking up all three points against the Clarets especially after Manchester United's last gasp win over West Ham United yesterday afternoon.

"We are here to win football matches and that’s the pressure," Arteta said in his pre-match press conference. "We know the amount of matches that we’re going to have to win if we want to be there, but you can’t look too far ahead.

"There’s a lot that happened in recent weeks, and it’s been extremely hard to manage the squad and the team because we’ve lost a lot players.

"We have to reunite, we have to win on Sunday and move from there because then we have a window, and hopefully we can get some players back."

Unlike their recent record against Man City and Liverpool, the north London outfit tend to dominate against Burnley, but they did lose the corresponding meeting last season.

In order to gain a measure of revenge and move back into the top-four - albeit for a couple of hours - Arsenal need to rediscover their form over the festive period as they've been below-par in their last three outings.

Aaron Ramsdale was shaky across both Carabao Cup semi-final legs against Liverpool and needs to overcome this mini-dip in form, but he gets the nod over Bernd Leno who may not be available with a back injury.

With that said, the biggest selection Arteta has to make with regards to his back four is who starts at right-back as a lack of training sessions for Takehiro Tomiyasu told as he struggled on Thursday night.

Whilst Calum Chambers back in full training after missing out against Liverpool, his availability means the Japan international won't be required to start two games in three days whilst not being fully fit.

This would also mean a rare start for the 27-year-old as the last time he did so across any competition was in the miserable 5-0 loss away at Man City back at the start of the season.

Into midfield and it's a familiar recent selection headache for Arteta; who partners Albert Sambi Lokonga in the engine room?

As Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey are both suspended, Ainsley Maitland-Niles is in Italy and Mohamed Elneny is away at the Africa Cup of Nations, the options are limited.

Based on the team selection against Thursday, Martin Odegaard looks likely to operate in a deeper role once again.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have become undroppable on the right and left wings respectively in recent weeks, but there are decisions to be regarding how to complete the front four.

Emile Smith Rowe didn't look fit against Liverpool and a return to the super sub role he had over the festive period until he's back to 100 per cent wouldn't be the worst decision.

This would allow Alexandre Lacazette to drop into the number 10 role, behind Eddie Nketiah who does have fond memories of playing Burnley having scored his first Premier League goal against them in 2019.

Arsenal predicted lineup vs Burnley: Ramsdale; Chambers, White, Gabriel, Tierney; Lokonga, Odegaard; Saka, Lacazette, Martinelli; Nketiah
