Tomato shortage explained as Morrisons and Aldi bosses warn issue could last 'weeks'

A nationwide shortage of tomatoes has been confirmed, as shoppers have been unable to secure the vegetable in stores like Morrisons and Aldi.

And now, bosses at Morrisons have explained the reasoning behind the sudden tomato shortage, reports Gloucestershire Live. Several supermarkets, including Aldi and Morrisons, have experienced a shortage.

The shortage has affected salad tomatoes as well as cherry tomatoes. Morrisons bosses have now put up signs in stores to explain the reason behind the lack of tomatoes. The retailer also told shoppers that it could last for a couple of weeks.

The Morrisons sign read: "Availability across our tomato range has been significantly impacted by adverse weather conditions across Spain and Morocco.

"The current shortage is likely to improve within a couple of weeks."

The growing of tomatoes in Morocco has been affected by what the Fresh Produce Journal have called a 'perfect storm' of flooding, cold temperatures and cancelled ferries, according to importers.

Spain's supply has also been affected by the weather - as stocks from Almeria are down 22 per cent during a three week period, compared to 2022.
