Tomas Ó Sé has pulled out of the running to become the next Offaly senior football manager.
The appointment of the Kerry legend in succession to John Maughan appeared to be a fait accompli, with Offaly chairman Michael Duignan even declaring Ó Sé’s interest in the role while Maughan was still in place.
However, a change in his work circumstances, combined with the lengthy commute from his Cork base, have caused Ó Sé to withdraw.
The five-time All-Ireland winner was added to Maughan’s management team ahead of the 2022 season and though the campaign proved disappointing as Offaly suffered relegation to Division Three and exited the Leinster Championship and Tailteann Cup with a whimper, Ó Sé was well received by the players and would have been a popular appointment as manager.
His decision leaves Offaly in something of a quandary after they appeared to have placed all their eggs in the one basket.
Declan Kelly, who guided the county to a memorable All-Ireland success at under-20 level last year, has apparently also ruled himself out due to work commitments.
The county board are on the lookout for a new hurling manager too having decided against granting Michael Fennelly a fourth year at the helm.
