Tom Lawrence urged to ignore 'flattering' EPL interest

Rangers player Tom Lawrence has been urged to turn down 'flattering' interest from Premier League new boys Ipswich Town.

However, Carlton Palmer believes that a switch to recently relegated Sheffield United may be a good next step for him in his career.

The 30-year-old has played at Portman Road before in the early days of his career, and reports have suggested that Kieran McKenna is interested in signing him to add some much-needed experience to his first-team squad ahead of next season in the Premier League.

Giovanni Bronckhorst - who signed Lawrence on a free transfer two years ago - has also been credited with holding an interest in the attacking midfielder after landing the manager job at Besiktas.

Sheffield United are also keeping tabs on Lawrence, who has just one year left on his deal at the Scottish Premiership side.

And Palmer believes that if the Wales international is to move on this summer, then he would be best served to join the Championship side.

The former England defender told Football League World: “Tom Lawrence has proven that he is a player who can operate at the top Championship level, and he would be a good signing for Sheffield United.

"He has picked up a few injuries in recent seasons, but he is durable, and he can play anywhere across the forward line. So, he would be a very, very good signing for Sheffield United if they can get it over the line.

“I suppose the fee is not going to be massive given Tom’s age. Obviously, he would be flattered that his name has been linked to Ipswich Town, but he will be conscious of the fact he is 30, and he will be wanting to play regular football.

“Will that be guaranteed at Ipswich Town? Maybe not and if he goes to Sheffield United under Chris Wilder, he will be guaranteed more game time.”
