Tom Lawrence seals Rangers transfer as Ibrox club trump English rivals for free agent

Rangers have completed the signing of Welsh international Tom Lawrence - their second summer recruit and third new face to arrive at Ibrox this window.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst won the race for the 28-year-old’s signature after he became a free agent following his departure from crisis-hit League One side Derby County. And Lawrence joins Antonio Colak who arrived from Greek side PAOK and John Souttar after his pre-contract move from Hearts.

Sheffield United were one of a number of Championship clubs, including Watford, who were interested in signing the Manchester United youth graduate. But the opportunity to play European football - the Light Blues will go into the Europa League group stage even if they fall at the Champions League qualifiers - at Ibrox and a more lucrative package tipped the balance in Rangers’ favour as they continue to strengthen in a bid to win back the Scottish Premiership title from Celtic.

Lawrence told the Rangers website: “I am delighted to have joined Rangers and I’m excited to get started. The club is known worldwide for its history, successes and fan base and I look forward to being part of that going forward and getting to play in front of the supporters at Ibrox.”

And manager Van Bronckhorst added: “I am really pleased we have been able to secure the signing of Tom and he will further add to our attacking options. He has gained valuable experience over a number of years with Derby County and I look forward to working with him this season.”
