Tom Holland quits acting after The Crowded Room 'broke' him and left him needing a break

Tom Holland has spoken of how he decided to take a break from acting after starring in The Crowded Room.

The British actor, 27, has spoken of how filming the new miniseries "broke" him and left him needing a year-long break for the sake of his mental health.

In a new interview, the Spider-Man actor has told of how he realised he needs to "relax" and be a "regular bloke" sometimes.

Tom, who will star in the upcoming AppleTV+ miniseries The Crowded Room, which he also produced, left him in need of a break.

The new miniseries has a focus on mental health, with Tom revealing that working on the film was "tough" because it meant he needed to explore "certain emotions" that he said he had "definitely never experienced before".

The Crowded Room is a series that is inspired by Daniel Keyes’ 1981 novel The Minds of Billy Milligan, and the TV series will follow a young man’s arrest for a crime and the investigator who will solve it.

Tom will play the role of Danny Sullivan, a man arrested for his involvement in a New York City shooting in 1979.

Taking to Extra on Tuesday, the BRIT School alum addressed how he decided to take a break so he could be a "regular bloke from Kingston and just relax".

He spoke of being "terrified by the idea" of plating Danny, which he later added was a "really good thing" for him.

"I just really agreed that it was time to tell the story about mental health — mental health that is brought on by trauma," he said, before adding how it resonated with him.

Speaking about the show and how he "really enjoyed" making it, he added: "The show did break me."

"I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was," he went on to add.

Elsewhere in the chat, she spoke about what he had been getting up to during his recent break and downtime, with him revealing he had been seeing his family and friends, with him even playing golf a fair few times.

"I've been, you know, going to the garden centre and buying plants and doing my best to keep them alive and all that sort of stuff. I've just been trying to be, you know, regular bloke from Kingston and just relax," he went on.
