Tom Heaton reveals what Manchester United dressing room think about club's trophy drought

Tom Heaton has admitted that Manchester United's dressing room is more than aware of the club's current trophy drought.

United booked their place in the League Cup final after defeating Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Old Trafford in the second leg of the competition's semi-final on Wednesday night, thanks to second-half goals from Anthony Martial and Fred.

The Reds comfortably won the two-legged semi-final 5-0 and Newcastle, who are currently third in the Premier League after investment from a Saudi-led takeover, are the only club standing in their way of League Cup glory.

Ten Hag has the opportunity to win a trophy in his first season in charge on February 26, but more importantly, the final at Wembley is a chance to end the club's trophy drought, which is the worst seen at Old Trafford for over 40 years.

Jose Mourinho is the last manager to win a trophy for United in the Europa League in 2017 and Heaton, who kept a clean sheet against Forest on Wednesday, admitted the players are aware of that barren run.

"We're off to Wembley, that was the ambition tonight and we had a good start last week, 3-0 away from home, so coming into tonight, we wanted to go out and win the game with another clean sheet and we've done that," Heaton told MUTV.

"Everyone is looking forward to it. It's the first marker for us, the first final that comes around in the season and to be back in one of those is fantastic. It's exactly where we want to be and the aim tonight was to make it to the final.

"We're all aware of it [the trophy drought] and this football club is based on winning. To do that, you have to be in the final, when it comes around, I appreciate there are a lot of games before that, it will be a tough game, but one we will embrace,

"We have a real good feeling and we want to keep the momentum going."
