Everton told why Virgil van Dijk avoided Liverpool red card for 'reckless' Amadou Onana challenge
Former Premier League referee Chris Foy has explained why Virgil van Dijk rightly only picked up a yellow card for his challenge on Amadou Onana.
During the second half of Saturday’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, the Dutchman was booked for a challenge on the Everton midfielder. However, replays seemed to suggest that the Liverpool man was lucky to only pick up a booking. Darren England, on VAR duty for the game, is believed to have reviewed the tackle and opted to stick with referee Anthony Taylor’s original on field decision.
After reviewing the call made by Taylor, Foy has explained why the Greater Manchester-based match official made the correct call in only giving Van Dijk a yellow card.

“Anthony Taylor had an excellent Merseyside derby and he was absolutely right to show the yellow card to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk for his challenge on Amadou Onana,” he told the Daily Mail.

Yes, a lot has been said about the former Paris Saint-Germain player heading back to Merseyside, and finally on transfer deadline day it was announced that he had re-signed with the club he left three years previously. Of course, supporters were keen to show their appreciation for a player they never lost the love and respect for.
But, the man heading off the pitch at that juncture of the game deserved every ounce of that standing ovation too. Tom Davies might not have been as high-key a performer as Alex Iwobi or Amadou Onana alongside him in the latest Merseyside Derby, but he proved without question that there's an important role for him to play in this squad.
