Tom Curran injury: Surrey seamer ruled out with stress fracture in new blow

Surrey seamer Tom Curran is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a stress fracture of the back.

Curran sustained the injury while playing for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League and returned early from the tournament this month.

The news is a major blow to the 28-year-old, who suffered a similar injury while playing in Australia’s Big Bash League last winter. Only last month, the England international announced he was stepping back from red-ball cricket in an attempt to manage his workload and protect his physical and mental wellbeing.

Curran, who last played for England in the summer of 2021, scored his maiden first-class century during Surrey’s County Championship-winning campaign last year and featured regularly in both the Vitality Blast and The Hundred, the latter for Oval Invincibles.

A Surrey statement confirmed that further examinations had revealed the extent of his latest problem.

“Tom Curran returned early from the Pakistan Super League and scans have shown he has suffered a stress fracture of the lumbar spine,” the club said.

“Tom will be out for a period of time whilst he recovers and undergoes rehabilitation at Surrey.”
