Tom Cruise goes viral on TikTok with 11 million views but the clips are fake

Tom Cruise fans were left utterly stunned after a series of "deepfake" videos were released that appear to feature the star.

The TikTok clips - which involve the fake 'Cruise' playing golf and performing a magic trick - have gone viral and so far been viewed over 11 million times on the platform.

In the footage, deepfake technology has been used to make the figure look and sound exactly like the Mission Impossible actor.

The figure then carries out a series of activities such as a clip where he practices playing golf.

One of the three clips also features the fake 'Cruise' looking and laughing at the camera before going on to complete a disappearing trick.

“I’m gonna show you some magic … It’s the real thing,” the figure says while holding a coin.

He then makes it disappear, adding cryptically: "It’s all the real thing."

Shared in a profile called 'deeptomcruise' the TikTok user has so far amassed 370,000 followers for the three videos.

While it is unclear who is behind the creation of the videos, many viewers have already expressed concern about the advances of the deepfake technology.

"This went from being cool to starting to scare me," penned one viewer.

"Someone be using Tom Cruise Polyjuice potion," added a second.

A third wrote: "This Tom Cruise deep fake is scary good. The future will be strange."

Deepfake videos are AI-generated fake clips and have actually been around for quite some years.

However, as technology continues to advance as does the abilities of deepfake programmes such as the one used to generate the fake 'Cruise'.

In the past, other figures that have been molded into deepfake clips include a fake 'Jon Snow', who apologised for the ending of Game of Thrones.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg has also been at the centre of a deepfake video in which the fake character bragged about controlling 'billions of peoples' stolen data.'

So far, Tom Cruise is yet to comment on the recent viral clips.
