It feels like ancient pop culture lore, but Tom Cruise and Peter Overton have an 18-year running beef that Cruise hasn't forgotten about.
While promoting War of the Worlds back in 2005, Cruise sat down with Overton for a special 60 Minutes interview. But it all took a turn for the worse, with Overton started asking about Cruise's ex-wife, Nicole Kidman. For Cruise, that seemed like a total invasion.
Cruise snapped at the journalist: "You're stepping over the line, and you know you are."
But it seems that even now, all these years later, Cruise isn't quite ready to forgive and forget.
A source told Now To Love said: "Anyone connected to 'That Interview' was scratched off, and Peter Overton was certainly among the people who didn't get an invite."
Now To Love reported that Cruise was very careful with his invite list for the this year's Mission Impossible red carpet. In an effort to keep it drama-free, he excluded Overton. The source claimed that Cruise was trying to keep this movie release very forward-focused, not wanting to bring up anything from his past.
The source said: "Visiting Australia with Nic and their kids was the first time in his life he felt part of something bigger than his career. It will always be an emotional return for him."
A reminder of his ex on this big day was sure to bring the energy down. With the premiere being in Australia, Cruise was in a country that was just one big memory of Kidman given the considerable amount of time they spent there together.
Overton wasn't the only absence in the typical press roundup. Typically, Lucia Hawley would be on the carpet covering for Live From E!. In many ways, she's the go-to for live celebrity overage in Australia. However, Hawley is Kidman's niece.
The source actually said that Cruise would have "vetoed" Hawley's RSVP, if one existed at all. Kidman, according to the source, wouldn't have wanted her there anyway and Hawley probably knew that.
