Tom Brady and former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had many happy years together with the New England Patriots, winning six Super Bowl's in the process and being integral pieces to the greatest dynasty in NFL history.
In that period, teams have attempted to tempt McDaniels away from the Patriots, and they've twice done so successfully. In 2009, McDaniels joined the Denver Broncos as head coach, where he would largely struggle. With Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow at quarterback, McDaniels would not find a worthy quarterback for his offensive scheme, and would go 11-17 in his 18 months in charge before being fired.
One year at the St. Louis Rams would follow, before he was re-hired as the Patriots offensive coordinator, winning three more Super Bowl's alongside Brady and head coach Bill Belichick, and being regarded as one of the great play-callers in the league.
After 2017 though, following a Super Bowl loss to the Philadlephia Eagles, McDaniels agreed to take the Indianapolis Colts head coaching job. Many had assumed that a much-publicised fall out between Brady and McDaniels, which was caught on camera, may have had a role to play with Brady snubbing and raging at his offensive playcaller.
The Pats went on to win the game comfortably, but Brady threw for no touchdowns and one interception and was unhappy with his performance. McDaniels was clearly displeased with Brady, with head coach Belichick not stepping in to defuse the situation.
However, just two days after announcing his intentions to join the Colts as head coach, he withdrew and stayed with the Patriots, as they went one to win another Super Bowl that following season.
But after Brady's departure in 2020, joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, McDaniels would receive an offer to join the Las Vegas Raiders as head coach. He accepted the job and returned to the AFC West.
Through the first nine games, though, the Raiders struggles have seen them fall to one of the worst records in the NFL - something completely unexpected after the additions of superstars Davante Adams and Chandler Jones this past off-season.
With a difficult schedule to go, the Raiders may already be out of playoff contention, with whispers that McDaniels may not even see the year out as head coach, and is favourite to be the next coach to be fired.
