Tom Brady has firm retirement decision in mind ahead of NFL season opener

Tom Brady is reportedly set to finally call time on his illustrious career and retire from the NFL at the end of the 2022 season.

Earlier in the offseason, Brady announced his retirement but changed his mind and returned to the sport just 48 days later. While the seven-time Super Bowl champion has returned to playing action for the new season, Brady is seemingly set to finally retire once the campaign concludes.

According to the NFL Network, the 2022 season will be Brady’s last. The 45-year-old will kick off the year when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to Texas to face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

However, the report on Brady’s future also suggested emotions on the matter remain fluid and a final decision may not be made until the end of the season. While speaking to reporters about his chances of retirement, Brady said: “I think we're all getting one day older at a time.

“We're all not sure whether we're going to be here next year or not, that's the reality for every player, every coach, every parent. You just never know. We should all take advantage of the opportunity that we have.”

Brady is set to be an unrestricted free agent for just the second time in his career next offseason. Earlier this offseason, the Miami Dolphins were punished for illegally contacting the quarterback on multiple occasions while he was under contract with the New England Patriots and Buccaneers.

During a tumultuous offseason, Brady took a team-sanctioned 11-day hiatus amidst training camp with his absence labeled as ‘personal reasons’. The NFL Network reports the quarterback spent much of the time away in the Bahamas at a private resort with his family in order to fulfil a promise he would vacation with them in August for the first time in two decades.

Brady celebrated his 45th birthday and has always harboured the dream of playing in the NFL at that age. His brief retirement at 44 left many confused as to why he had decided to retire one year earlier than planned.

Brady made his preseason debut against the Indianapolis Colts and completed 6-of-8 passes for 44 yards. Tampa Bay enters the first week of the season with the second-best odds to win Super Bowl LVII this season behind only the Buffalo Bills.

There is an opportunity that Brady heads into retirement with a record-extending eighth Lombardi Trophy. Once he walks away from the sport, Brady has his post-NFL plans already in place after he inked a 10-year contract worth $375 million to become the lead analyst for FOX Sports.
