Former ABC journalist Tom Baddeley has been named as ABC Radio Perth's new Breakfast presenter to replace the late Russell Woolf.

Baddeley is best known for his ABC news reading and business reporting, as well as presenting former ABC current affairs program Stateline.

He makes his return to the ABC after 16 years, having since worked in media relations, public advocacy and public affairs, including a stint at WA Super Rugby team the Western Force.

Baddeley said it was a privilege to take over the show from his "good mate" and former Breakfast presenter Woolf, who died suddenly last October.

Radio legend Russell Woolf is remembered as a beloved friend and colleague

"A favourite memory of my earlier time with the ABC was the 'gateway to the weekend' conversation I had with Russell each Friday," he said.

ABC Radio Perth local manager Sarah Knight said she was delighted to welcome Baddeley back to the national broadcaster.

"I'm sure his easy-going manner, coupled with his local Perth knowledge, will provide the perfect start to the day," she said.

"With Tom, you'll get a broad range of news, chat and humour — all the ingredients for a great breakfast."

Death sparks outpouring of grief

Woolf's shock death sparked a huge emotional response from the Perth community, with calls flooding into the station and people taking to social media to share their sorrow at hearing the news.

WA Premier Mark McGowan and Woolf's former co-host and host of the Morning program, Nadia Mitsopoulos, were two who paid tribute on Twitter.

Baddeley said he hoped to carry on the lessons he learned from Woolf.

"My aim is to bring what I gleaned from Woolfy to the new breakfast show in 2022," he said.

ABC Radio Perth Breakfast with Tom Baddeley will start on Monday February 7.
