Tokyo Olympics: Swim Ireland announce squad for summer Games

Ireland will be sending their biggest swimming squad to an Olympic games this year after a nine-person strong team was announced for Tokyo.

Newtownabbey native Danielle Hill (21) has been included in the squad and she already qualified for 100m backstroke but will also compete in the 50m freestyle with Ireland set to be represented in 14 events.

She was a 2018 Commonwealth Games finalist.

Magheralin native Daniel Wiffen will feature in the 1,500m freestyle having qualified for the 800m in April's Irish trials.

Jack McMillan of Bangor Swimming club will travel as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team after narrowly missing out on qualification for the individual 200m freestyle.

Jon Rudd, National Performance Director and Team Leader for the Games said: “This has been the longest ever Olympic cycle and qualification period that the sport has faced.

"To have nine swimmers amongst an eleven member aquatics team for the Games is an excellent outcome for our sport and all those involved.

"A double Trials and a protracted relay appeal meant that many of our athletes have not known until very recently whether they would or could be selected to this team, an uncertainty that has been difficult for everyone, especially those who narrowly missed out. The standard of swimming in Ireland is growing, and without all these athletes striving for improvement, we would not be where we are today, fielding the largest ever swim team for Ireland.”

The delayed Olympics are scheduled to get under way on Friday, July 23 with the closing ceremony on Sunday, August 8.

TEAM IRELAND SWIMMERS:

  • Darragh Greene
  • Danielle Hill
  • Brendan Hyland
  • Finn McGeever
  • Jack McMillan
  • Mona McSharry
  • Shane Ryan
  • Ellen Walshe
  • Daniel Wiffen
