Tokyo logs 8,638 new coronavirus cases

The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 8,638 new coronavirus cases Thursday, logging a record-high for the second consecutive day.

The capital logged 7,377 cases Wednesday.

The cumulative number of cases nationwide topped 2 million on Thursday, according to a Yomiuri Shimbun tally.

Kanagawa Prefecture confirmed 3,344 on the day, surpassing the 3,000 mark for the first time. The previous record was logged on Aug. 20 last year, with 2,878 cases.

The tally in Aichi Prefecture also topped the 3,000 mark for the first time Thursday, with 3,074 confirmed cases.
