A toddler has died after being hit by a car in a driveway in Craigieburn, in Melbourne’s north.
Victoria police are investigating and said a male driver is helping them with their inquiries.
“The circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be established and the investigation remains ongoing,” Victoria police said in a statement.
The toddler was hit by the vehicle in the Esteem Road driveway at about 8.20pm on Friday night.
“Paramedics worked on the child, but they were pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said.
“The male driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their inquiries.”
Victoria police assistant commissioner, Glenn Weir, told Nine newspapers that the timing was tragic.
“Coming into Christmas, that is really something that is really going to be hard to deal with for obviously family, friends, neighbours and first responders,” he said.
“It’s just … a really salient lesson on the fragility of life.
“It’s still under investigation as to what exactly happened, but the outcome is tragic and will be really, really heartfelt throughout that community for a long time.”
