A number of police vehicles and a mobile police station were at the scene. A Merseyside Police spokesperson has confirmed "an investigation is now underway into the incident".

One parent, who did not wish to be named, was walking past the block of flats. She to the ECHO that after hearing of the incident, she will be "hugging my child tighter tonight".

Another resident added it was "devastating" as they "hoped the poor child is okay". Horrified locals watched on as the police cordon was put in place on Wednesday afternoon blocking off the entrance to the block of flats at Capricorn Way in Bootle.

One passer-by said they were "shocked" to see the police cordon in place on their way home as they said they "hope it's not anything, we don't need more bad news." Another described seeing "a lot of tape".

One resident, who lives opposite the block of flats, said the focus appeared to be on a slightly open window on the fifth floor of the block of flats. People were able to come and go and access the nearby park from the flats, but the entrance remained cordoned off.

A number of police cars have left the scene but the cordon and mobile police station remain in place.
