Todd Cantwell is Rangers show pony and like of Michael Beale's men can only deliver when pressure is off - Hotline

Saturday's Old Firm clash at Ibrox might not mean anything in terms of the title but the big two remain the hot topic of debate and sniping on the Hotline.

Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: “I’m hoping Ange Postecoglou has David Turnbull in his starting lineup on Saturday as I’m convinced it will be his final involvement in an Old Firm match. The abundance of talent in midfield has made it increasingly difficult for him to nail down a starting place and it is now looking more than likely he’ll be elsewhere next season.”

Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, said: “Ange Postecoglou has been an outstanding revelation since he came in. I remember Alan Brazil cackling about his appointment to Celtic. It’s funny now, how wrong he was.” George Rhoden, Corby, said: “Way back at Christmas time Scott Gowers commented on the Hotline that new Rangers manager Beale had won his first three games and had a better start than Big Ange and Celtic would have no chance of winning the league. How did that go for you, Scott?”

Willie Mercer, Dumfries, responded to a caller who feared Celtic would lose Postecoglou to England, saying: “Mr McBrearty can rest easy, for as with every other previously successful Old Firm manager - many of whom had equal or greater success than Postecoglou - their success in the two horse race which is Scottish football has failed to have any of the top teams in England or Europe for that matter rushing to their doors. This will not change for Postecoglou or any following successful Old Firm managers.”

Jack Armstrong, Bathgate, said: “Todd Cantwell is not a great player - he is a show boater who plays to the crowd. As long as no one is near him he looks good, but the minute any pressure is put on him he can’t handle it and shows his petulance by always picking up cards. That’s why Norwich got rid of him.”

Bud Hay, Dumfries, said: “I am dreading Saturday as I fancy Celtic won’t get a result if the best player in Scotland (Kyogo) is not playing. We can’t win all the time and it doesn’t really matter as we are not playing for anything.”

Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: “UEFA should sit down at the end of this season and start looking through the stats from the great Rangers penalty conspiracy that can no longer be ignored. I hope they take into consideration the certain penalties that our referees will now award against them in the next three games to try and cover their tracks.”

Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, said: “With media reports saying Rangers are ready to let Colak transfer out, if true it borders on stupidity. A natural goal scorer, he’s the only one they’ve left with Morelos going and Sakala who couldn’t score if standing on the goal line.

"It’s a bad situation as without finding at least a 25-plus goal scorer for the new season it could be over very early for the Light Blues. With what money the club has left, spend it on proven scorers Van Veen and/or Shankland - imagine the goal scoring potential they could bring. But if Beale can’t or won’t get them the question should be asked why?”

Jamie Thompson, Clydebank, said: “I can only hope that Beale targets decent players who can play exciting football, not the utter rubbish fans have had to put up with last three or four years. I’m not confident that Beale is right man for next season. The main issue right now is to get rid of these players that have failed to perform and not the class of player Rangers needs.”

Brian McDermott, Maryhill, commenting on the latest Ibrox boardroom changes, said: “My goodness there’s more departures at Ibrox than Heathrow Airport these days. I’m hearing major investment incoming with billionaire Sheikh n Vac freshening things up.”

Iain Alan, Linlithgow, said: “Rangers and Celtic must be the only sponsors of VAR as they are the only clubs that benefit. Alex Cochrane’s sending off was a joke. As for Connor Goldson, why is he allowed to pull his opponent to the ground without a free kick being given? How did the officials and VAR miss that one? The bias in favour of the Old Firm gets worse with VAR not better.”

Finally, Neil Renton, Edinburgh , had a point we can all agree on, saying: “Hibs’ signing Lewis Stevenson for another year is great news for the club. Not only has he been a fantastic servant to the Easter Road side but he’s a fantastic model professional to the younger players.”
