Midfielder Todd Cantwell and winger Morgan Whittaker appear to be edging closer to moves to Rangers as both their club bosses hinted at squad overhauls.
The Ibrox side have seen a bid rejected for Swansea City forward Whittaker, who impressed while out on loan at Plymouth Argyle earlier this season while Cantwell emerged as a target last week, but the 24-year-old has also been touted with a move to PSV Eindhoven after falling out out of favour in the English Championship. Michael Beale has spoken openly about both players and has stated he expects the pair to move in this transfer window.
Norwich boss David Wagner has not included Cantwell in a matchday squad since his appointment since his arrival at Carrow Road earlier this month, and has admitted the England U21 international is not in his plans going forward this season. Speaking to the East Anglian News, he revealed he wanted to free up space in the first-team to create an academy pathway.
Asked about replacing Cantwell, Wagner said: “I don't think you have to have a huge squad, with so much talent here, but I like to have competition, for sure. I don't think it's necessary in a football club where we have such a great academy.
"If they are able to perform consistently when they get into the first team training environment, then we keep them with us. Obviously when this window is closed, when maybe there is some space in the squad, then we will consider whether there is a space for one of our academy players."
Following the FA Cup defeat to Bristol City, Swansea boss Russel Martin has warned club bosses he hopes to make some moves soon to replace fringe stars like Whittaker. The 22-year-old has yet to make an appearance for the Swans after being recalled from his Plymouth loan.
Asked about new signings to replace outgoing players, former Rangers defender Martin admitted plans where underway: "Targets come and go, things change a lot very quickly. Since I've been here, we've done a lot of deals late on in transfer windows, but we have to avoid some of the deals we've done previously. We have to be really careful about that.
"We've ended up making signings that bolster the squad but don't impact the starting 11. I don't think it reflects very well on us or the player. I think we've done too many of them."
