Todd Boehly set to reward Mason Mount but must also consider Reece James' Chelsea future

Giving young players a big money contract has not always been the ideal route for Chelsea to take in the past. Looking at players such as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who have previously managed to negotiate impressive deals without going on to become regular starters, it's only right that Mason Mount be offered that same respect, with his current contract set to expire in 2024.

According to data from Sportrac, Mount currently earns £88,462 a week. This makes him the 17 th highest earner of the squad, despite winning back-to-back club Player of the Year awards. However, reports suggest that the 23-year-old may see his salary doubled, taking him right up into Chelsea's top five earners next season.

I News reports that Chelsea are keen to tie down the England international. Mount is also keen on remaining at his childhood club, despite interest from several other European rivals.

With Todd Boehly's era in charge due to commence soon, sorting a Mason Mount contract extension would be a great way to open his account. It will fend off those eager rivals who have been monitoring his situation closely. According to The Athletic, three Premier League clubs and others around Europe have been 'putting plans in place' to attempt to sign the 23-year-old.

Whilst Boehly makes his mark by putting these rumours to bed, he will need to discuss the future of Reece James immediately after. James is on course to becoming one of the best full-backs in the world right now. The right-back is reportedly sitting on a £58,000 per week salary, placing him in the bottom five earners at the club alongside Ethan Ampadu and Nathan Baxter.

According to Goal, Real Madrid are looking to sign the full-back in 2023. His Blues contract will run out in 2025, so Boehly and co will have ample time to ensure that Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger mistake is not repeated.

It is imperative that both Mount and James are given equal opportunities to take their place among Chelsea's top earners. With their commitment to the club and their importance, it's safe to say that either player could become Chelsea's new captain. I see these players as the future for Chelsea football club, hence why their contracts need to be the first ones sorted upon Boehly's official arrival.
