Todd Boehly's Marina Granovskaia decision that paved the way for Graham Potter to join Chelsea

Graham Potter is expected to be appointed as the new Chelsea head coach in the coming days after Todd Boehly sacked Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday.

football.london understands that Potter has reached a verbal agreement to become Chelsea's new head coach after meeting Boehly for talks on Wednesday. No contracts have been signed just yet, but Potter is expected to become the Blues' new manager – with the club hoping to appoint him before Saturday afternoon's Premier League match with Fulham.

After spending a world record £273.5million in the transfer window, Boehly's decision to sack Tuchel just six days after the window slammed shut came as a massive shock.

There's now the question of whether that massive recruitment drive was worth it and whether or not Potter will have a say on transfers in the future.

Alan Curtis, who worked with Potter at Swansea, believes that Potter will bring in his own players at Chelsea: "I'm sure he will do [things his own way]," he said, as seen via Football Daily.

"Obviously, going into Chelsea is going to be a different job, [a] much more challenging job than certainly when he was at Swansea and possibly even at Brighton, dealing with different individuals and dealing with such a massive club.

"But yeah, he will want to do things his own way, and in terms of recruitment, he will identify players. They've got a huge, very talented squad anyway, and I'm sure if and when he does take the job, then he can't wait to get his teeth into the players.

"Certainly, from our point of view [at Swansea], the players certainly weren't sceptical because from his first meeting, first training session, the players were right behind him, and I feel the players got better and better. There's nothing better for a player than if your game is being improved all the time and you're being challenged, so I have no doubt whatsoever, if he takes over Chelsea, then he will be a resounding success."

Boehly has already made several big decisions in his short time as Chelsea owner, including letting director Marina Granovskaia move onto new pastures.

Being in charge of transfers was one of Granovskaia's predominant duties at the club. However, now that it's been suggested that Potter could take the lead on player recruitment, it's a sign that perhaps Boehly always envisioned a new look for Chelsea. Thus, Tuchel's eventual sacking and Potter's impending appointment were always inevitable.

Of course, the decision to relieve Tuchel of his responsibilities may merely reflect the Blues' recent poor form. But you have to wonder whether it was part of Boehly's long-term plan to change Chelsea from top to bottom.
