Todd Boehly's grand gesture shows new Chelsea plan as Thomas Tuchel looks to complete rebuild

Chelsea's new front-facing co-owner is already doing all he can to put himself on the scene. Todd Boehly's early remit since taking charge of the club has been to launch himself willingly into an alien interim sporting director role, in tandem with familiarising himself with the European football market.

The America businessman has taken another step to become entangled with the right bodies as well, taking it upon himself to organise an informal dinner for other Premier League executives, writes The Athletic.

Alongside Behdad Eghbali, the co-founder of Clearlake Capital, Chelsea have been big actors so far in the transfer market without making the desired moves, to this point. Their bold approach has been commented upon by experienced directors and negotiators within the market as impressive. However, he has a big two weeks ahead in order to get a similar reaction out of Thomas Tuchel.

The German has cut an increasingly frustrated figure on Chelsea's tour of the USA, and is demanding that he receives more additions to his squad quickly, otherwise they might not be prepared for the league opener against Everton in less than two weeks, he has warned.

Although transfer business won't be at the top of the menu for Boehly's meal, that not all other 19 clubs could attend, though it is reported that the grand gesture has gone down well nonetheless. The executives were already due to meet for the annual shareholders meeting and Boehly has taken things a step further with his event invitation open to all.

Although not a breakthrough action, Boehly's desire to be a big part of Chelsea's public decisions is a stark change from Roman Abramovich's ownership, where not only was he a mystery background member, his key senior officials, Marina Granovskaia and Bruce Buck, also rarely made any public appearances.

This highlights Boehly's wider grand plan at Stamford Bridge. The 48-year-old already has ideas to restructure the club's recruitment, marketing, stadium plans and internal business model as he attempts to revolutionise the club. The LA Dodgers co-owner has already made a favourable impression on Chelsea fans and his continued attempts to demonstrate his actions and have a clear forward-facing plan is admirable, especially during a time in which the on-field preparation is looking behind schedule.

Boehly's first task, despite his meal, will still be to make hasty progress on the transfer front as Tuchel looks for up to four more additions to his side. The German is desperate to add at least one more centre-back, though football.london understands he would really prefer two, whilst trying to move on £180m worth of attacking talent could pave the way for further acquisitions higher up the pitch as well.

Chelsea have already spent £80m this summer but could reasonably have to treble that in order to completely reset their squad this summer.
