Todd Boehly's 'clear plan' for Chelsea outlined amid first January transfer deal

The January transfer window is yet to open but the groundwork put in place by Todd Boehly has gradually improved the feeling amongst the supporters after a difficult end to 2022. Prior to the World Cup, Chelsea suffered four defeats in five games to find themselves drifting apart from their Premier League rivals but the winter window provides an injection of optimism.

As the American businessman did in the summer, Boehly is expected to be busy throughout next month's window in a bid to revamp Graham Potter's squad. Christopher Nkunku's services have reportedly already been 'confirmed' while the process of signing Enzo Fernandez has already begun.

football.london understands that the Blues are prepared to break their £97.5million transfer record for the World Cup winner in January amid the hunt for a new midfielder. The area of the pitch is a position co-owners Boehly and Behdad Eghbali will attempt to overhaul in the near future, with Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham joining Fernandez as potential additions.

Next month could see Chelsea smash their previous high of £75million spent in the winter market. Alongside a new midfielder, talks are continuing with AS Monaco for Benoit Badiashile while a move for a deputy right-back is expected to be accelerated following Reece James' setback.

One deal that Boehly has managed to complete early doors is the signing of striker David Datro Fofana from Molde. The 20-year-old is set to join the club on January 1 after netting 19 goals in 27 appearances in Norway this season.

After confirmation on Wednesday that the striker had completed the move to the Blues, Fofana's agent Atta Aneke laid out Boehly's plan for the club and it will be music to the ears of the Chelsea faithful. "Chelsea want to sign the best young talents in the world, and have a very clear plan on how to make them succeed as best as possible," Aneke said.

Should the work conducted in the summer be anything to go by, Chelsea will oversee a major overhaul of the playing squad over the next seven months. The Blues spent over £270m prior to the start of the 2022/23 season and a similar figure could be reached by January 31.
