Todd Boehly must solve overdue £83m Chelsea problem to grant Thomas Tuchel dream transfer plan

While the success of Todd Boehly's maiden summer transfer window will be determined by the pedigree of incomings, Chelsea have as big a job on their hands in trimming a bloated squad. Thomas Tuchel has hauled 29 players to the United States for his side's pre-season tour of Los Angeles, with the Blues set to face Club America and Charlotte FC in the coming days.

The west Londoners' squad ranges from first-team stalwarts to budding prospects, with Harvey Vale and Tino Anjorin granted the opportunity to impress under the stewardship of Tuchel. But, while Chelsea's squad boasts a wealth of healthy options, the club are yet to solve the futures of several returning loanees.

Chelsea's reluctance to trim the squad continues to defuse the spark of an exciting new era at Stamford Bridge. And, Boehly can reap a financial boost from offloading the club's hoarded talent while also opening first-team opportunities for new signings and Cobham graduates.

Marcos Alonso, Kendey, Emerson, Malang Sarr, Ross Barkley and Michy Batshuayi have all been inducted into Tuchel's travelling pre-season squad, though many of whom have either been heavily linked with an exit or struggle to justify a first-team position. The sextuple are valued at around £63million and could save Chelsea around £19.6million-per-annum on wages, according to CIES Football Observatory and Salary Sport.

Of which, could be set aside to fund Tuchel's proposed rebuild at the club. Jules Kounde, Declan Rice and Raphinha have each been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, though neither look poised to pen a deal in west London.

Though, football.london understand that the Blues and Manchester City are in 'total agreement' over Raheem Sterling, with the 27-year-old having completed the main part of his medical over the weekend in London. Boehly has had a £55million offer, which includes £10million payable via add-ons, accepted by the Premier League champions.

With a daunting rebuild in the pipeline, Tuchel is eager to continue his spritely summer spending spree. Speaking to football.london, the Blues boss said: "We are rebuilding, not improving the squad. We are rebuilding. This is always challenging, but we are up for the challenge.

"I don't know where we are from day one. What I can promise is that I will be here – if I can promise that – I will be here with full energy and positive energy no matter what. We will still work for Chelsea, and I refuse to think of negative scenarios. We will be competitive, on which level we will see."
