Todd Boehly makes Stamford Bridge debut as Chelsea suffer brutal Liverpool repeat

Over the next week, football.london will be taking a look back at the key events at Stamford Bridge over an unforgettable 2022.

However, the intense period that included sanctions, a congested bidding period and uncertainty over the club's future would soon find its needed conclusion, with a photo of Todd Boehly in colourful trainers outside Stamford Bridge smiling with a fan as his consortium edged closer to buying the club.

Champions League qualification was secured, even if not in the most convincing fashion, ending the league season with a home draw against Leicester and a 2-1 win over an already relegated Watford, requiring a 91st-minute winner from Ross Barkley.

The loudest cheers on the final day came from the Matthew Harding Lower as news of Manchester City's incredible comeback came through against Aston Villa to prevent Liverpool from winning the Premier League title.

Chelsea ended the season with 74 points in third place, the highest tally since the last title win in 2017, however, the 19-point gap to Man City remained.

Mason Mount was voted as Chelsea's player of the season for the second season running, and presented the award on the pitch after full-time.

The season wrapping up would quickly usher in the formalisation of the £4.25billion takeover on the final day of May, coupled with a statement including quotes from Boehly. "We are honoured to become the new custodians of Chelsea Football Club. We're all in - 100% - every minute of every match." Boehly said.

"Our vision as owners is clear: We want to make the fans proud. Along with our commitment to developing the youth squad and acquiring the best talent, our plan of action is to invest in the club for the long term and build on Chelsea's remarkable history of success."
