Todd Boehly issues warning over Chelsea stadium plan and what could split Clearlake partnership

Tensions: Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali - (Mike Egerton/PA Wire)

Todd Boehly has warned that Chelsea’s owners must be aligned on plans for a new stadium - or else go their separate ways.

Boehly bought the club in partnership with Clearlake Capital in 2022, with the stadium redevelopment seen as a key part of the incoming ownership’s long-term vision.

Three years on, however, and little concrete progress appears to have been made, with no decision yet on whether to expand Stamford Bridge or move to a new site, with Earl’s Court as one option.

In the interim, there have been well-documented tensions between the owners and at one stage earlier this season both parties were considering options to buy the other out.

In an interview with Bloomberg in Hong Kong, Boehly suggested his preference is to build “something new” and, while he played down talk of an ongoing boardroom rift, conceded that any serious disagreement over plans for the stadium could prove terminal for the relationship.

“We have to think about long-term what we’re trying to accomplish,” Boehly said. “We have a big stadium development opportunity that we have to flesh out and I think that’s going to be where we’re either aligned or we ultimately decide whether we go our separate ways.

“What’s been written and talked about is much more “drama” than what is actually happening.

“Obviously, inside London is really complex. It’s not like we’re building something in the middle of a rural environment. We have a lot of constituencies to make sure we care about. Certainly the Chelsea fanbase is one.

“Long-term, I think we’re going to be building something new and we’ll figure it out.”
