Todd Boehly handed clear summer transfer mission as Chelsea tipped to sign Robert Lewandowski

Former Chelsea and England defender Glen Johnson has urged the Blues to sign Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski this summer. It comes ahead of a huge few weeks for the club in the context of its future.

The first thing that has to be sorted off the pitch is the takeover, with the saga entering its third month since Roman Abramovich decided to sell the club. Todd Boehly’s consortium is edging closer to completing a deal, having been named preferred bidder and most recently held meetings with both Thomas Tuchel and Emma Hayes.

Back on the pitch, there is a crucial FA Cup final on Saturday, while beyond that, there will be a desire to begin putting plans into place for the upcoming transfer window. Discussing potential business, the German head coach said: “We have clear ideas how to improve, how to freshen the squad, improve the squad, bring new energy and quality.

“Would not be the first transfer window where you have a wish and cannot make it as a coach. We will find solutions but first of all we must adapt to the general situation. Then we see if it is possible and what is possible.”

There are a number of potential problems for Tuchel that will have to be solved, such as the lack of depth across the backline and the midfield, while scoring goals up front continues to be a concern. Club-record signing Romelu Lukaku is one of a number of strikers at the club that have struggled to find a run of consistency this season.

And, in light of that issue, Johnson has urged the Blues to sign Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski. The Polish international is set to reject a new deal with the Bundesliga champions, according to reports, opening up the possibility of a move away.

Speaking to Lord Ping, Johnson said: “For a club like Chelsea, I think they need to sign Robert Lewandowski. He is a more realistic signing, but these top, world-class strikers are hard to find. For his age and the possibility of the deal actually happening, I'd say Chelsea should sign Lewandowski.

“Chelsea obviously tried when they broke the bank for Romelu Lukaku and obviously Haaland was the one they would have liked to have signed, but it was always going to be hard to trump Man City, Liverpool or a team like Real Madrid so he was unlikely going to end up at Chelsea.”

Whether the club would make a move for the 33-year-old remains to be seen, especially with more pressing priorities elsewhere. However, he could be the first mission for incoming owner Boehly to make a statement.
