Todd Boehly drops major Chelsea contract hint after Reece James signs new long-term deal

Transfer Deadline Day may have passed but the work ethic of Todd Boehly has sure not slowed down one bit, as he has been busy for days after the window had closed.

From the Wesley Fofana signing, to the double acquisition of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria on Deadline Day, the interim sporting director can count his first summer in charge as rather successful, given the circumstances surrounding the state of the club at the start of the summer.

Not only has Boehly managed to spend £250million on new recruits that won't just add extra squad depth to the ranks, also quality too, but the lack of experience coming into the role was a major concern that the LA Dodgers co-owner effectively shut down with his actions.

Transfers haven't just been the order of the day in the few months his Clearlake Capital consortium have overseen day to day running of the club, but tying down first-team players to new and improved contracts in a very baseball style, has meant that he has been able to 'Americanise' Chelsea and provide the foundations for long-term stability in all areas of the squad.

Armando Broja signed a new six-year deal recently as the Albania international has been earmarked as the future of Chelsea's attack. A similar story has been played out with Reece James, as he also agreed to an extended deal amid consistent interest from the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Upon signing the deal, James said: "I am over the moon with my new contract and I’m thankful for the fans, the new ownership and everyone involved in the club. I cannot wait to see what the future holds, and I am sure we will have the chance of winning many trophies.

"I grew up supporting this club and I’ve been here since I was a six-year-old. I put pen to paper on a new deal because this is the club I want to be at. I’d like to say a special thanks to the fans, I am here to stay and we have a bright future ahead of us."

Boehly added: "We are thrilled to give Reece a new long-term contract at Chelsea. He is an outstanding player and a true Chelsea man, and we are all looking forward to watching him continue to flourish at Stamford Bridge.’

Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, co-controlling owners, added: "Reece is a very special footballer and one we love having at Chelsea under our ownership. His blend of physical and technical ability is a huge asset to our team now and for many years to come."

Who's next on this contractual gold rush? There have been rumours that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who is believed to be one of the lowest earners in the squad, has held preliminary talks with the new ownership but based on social media activity, it's another Cobham graduate who is set for crunch talks with Roman Abramovich's successors first.

Mason Mount, who has drawn interest from the likes of Liverpool and others, is set to be rewarded for his first few years of success that have been accumulated under Frank Lampard's and Thomas Tuchel's management.

Boehly indicated this news by 'liking' Fabrizio Romano's post about Mount's situation. The tweet read: "Next Chelsea player to discuss new deal will be Mason Mount. Talks are already in place since long time and he’s waiting for the club to send new, final proposal.

"Negotiations will continue soon."
