Todd Boehly ditches Roman Abramovich transfer model to gift Thomas Tuchel dream Chelsea swoop

Chelsea's new owners have taken the club a step closer to reformation under new stewardship, with the consortium slowly detaching themselves from Roman Abramovich's methods. First, Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Hansjörg Wyss and Mark Walter made changes to the boardroom at Stamford Bridge, with Marina Granovskaia and Bruce Buck handed their marching orders.

The aforementioned pair were heavily involved in contract negotiations with new signings, players, coaches and other members of staff. With Granovskaia and Buck given their marching orders and the American-led consortium eager to implement their ideas, greater incentives are now being included in player payment packages.

According to The Times, the new owners are overhauling the club's bonus and contract structures in a bid to rebalance the wage bill and retain motivation levels. The latter of which has been a reoccurring problem in west London, with each of Chelsea's prior managers all signing from the same hymn sheet.

It's said that these means of contract negotiations are already in place following the signings of Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly. The Times add that the duo have incentives in their deals which are correlative with Champions League performance and game time.

This is a ploy which moves away from Abramovich's scheme which only rewarded players for trophies won. It's believed that the former Chelsea owner dished out basic wages packets, with no bonus for top-four finishes.

Also, each member of the 2021 Champions League winning squad is said to have shared bonus pot in the region of £10million regardless of significant participation. While Abramovich created a serial winning culture in west London with the club winning 19 trophies, the Russian billionaire's methods saw the Blues walk into debt - of which he cleared before parting ways.

So, with Boehly rolling out a new method of payment for players, Chelsea - in theory - will be hoping to see greater consistency over a sustained period of time.
