Todd Boehly Chelsea plan concerns emerge as Petr Cech is latest in mass exodus of key figures

Petr Cech has made the decision to leave Chelsea football club. Losing Petr Cech the player, was a hard enough pill to swallow but as an integral figure of the Chelsea board, it is a bittersweet feeling. Todd Boehly has involuntarily taken the ‘out with the old, in with the new’ approach. The departure of Marina Granovskaia and Bruce Buck has shaken things up in the Chelsea hierarchy and it’s only a matter of time before we see the pros and cons of such decisions.

To be fair to Todd, taking on a project as big as owning Chelsea was always going to come with tough decisions. Not everybody would be happy with the departure of Cech but the key thing to note is that he was asked to stay. Reports suggest that Cech insisted that it was the right time for him to leave despite Marina Granovskaia staying until the end of the summer transfer window.

There are two ways to see this. The first is that Todd Boehly is on track to create a clean slate for Chelsea’s new era. The other is that maybe Boehly is in over his head here.

Trusting in a legend such as Petr Cech is easy for a fan like me. Not only has he kept the club in safe hands as a goalkeeper for his 11 years as a player, but he has continued to show his worth on an advisory level. His official role for the Blues was as a technical and performance advisor. With this in mind, he played an important role in buying Chelsea’s current goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy. He also gave fans a fond memory of the 2021 protests against the movement of the European Super League. Coming out of Stamford Bridge to plead with angry protesters, reassuring them that Chelsea would back out of the Super League initiative is probably one of the bravest things a board member could do.

There are several happy memories shared with Cech but there’s always a time and place when people decide to move on. After three years in a technical role and a change in ownership, Cech decided that it was now.

I can’t lie, it does seem kind of fishy from the outside looking in. Fans will have a lot of questions that may or may not be answered in the long run. What was so bad that he felt that he had to leave now? Why did he refuse to stay even after Boehly had asked him to? Is Boehly up to something that our goalkeeping legend does not approve of?

It’s out of our hands as fans but someday the questions will be answered. There could be more positives than negatives with the departure of the most known figures in the Chelsea hierarchy. However, the departure of Petr Cech has left me questioning everything about this takeover. On the other hand, with Boehly’s experience, there’s still reason to believe that everything is going to be alright.
