Todd Boehly can finally complete five-year Chelsea transfer mission after Juventus decision

Chelsea are in need of defensive reinforcements given the injury concerns to both Ben Chilwell and Reece James. James is set to be out for three to four weeks after aggravating a knee injury in the win against Bournemouth.

Chilwell has been absent since the start of November after picking up a hamstring injury which saw him miss out on a place in the England World Cup squad. Marc Cucurella was signed in a £60million deal from Brighton in the summer, but there remains a lack of depth in defence.

Graham Potter will hope that the two England internationals can return quickly from their respective injuries and help aid his team in finishing inside the top four come the end of the season. The Blues may have a surprise option to help solve their defensive woes ahead of next season in the shape of a former transfer target.

A report from TuttoMercatoWeb earlier this year claimed that the Blues were interested in Alex Sandro having previously had a €40million (£33million) bid rejected for him in the past. The Juventus star is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2022/23 campaign with the Italian giants not considering using their option to extend his contract by a further year.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the 31-year-old since 2018 and Sandro himself has admitted to being keen on a move to the Premier League. Speaking in 2018, he said: “I think that one day, who knows what will happen?

"I have a desire to play in the Premier League, but right now I am very happy where I am. I am happy with the club where I am, with the league where I am playing."

With his time in Italy seemingly coming to an end in the next six months, he may feel it's time to finally secure a move to the Premier League. Chelsea could look to secure a pre-agreement with the Brazilian, as they have with Christopher Nkunku, that would see the defender join the club in the summer.

His experience would be a huge help to Potter's squad whilst he remains a solid option in defence. The injuries to Chilwell and James highlight the need for capable replacements in the full-back areas of the squad, and Todd Boehly may feel that Sandro fits the bill.
