Todd Boehly and Hansjorg Wyss offered easy Chelsea win after Roman Abramovich sale

It has been less than 12 months since Chelsea supporters filled the streets around Stamford Bridge and made their feelings very clear about the club's announcement that they would be one of the teams joining the European Super League.

On that night as Thomas Tuchel's side prepared to face Brighton, vast swathes of bodies filled the area raising signs that suggested: 'We want our night in Stoke', 'Football belongs to us, not you', 'Fans not customers' and 'Earn it, you can't buy our passion'.

Petr Cech could not temper the fervour as he foraged into the crowds in west London, with the game was delayed due to the disruption that the club clearly did not anticipate.

Chelsea had joined AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Man City, Man United, Real Madrid and Tottenham as 'Founding Clubs' for the new project.

While, Bruce Buck and Guy Laurence took much of the flak for the decision, Roman Abramovich did not escape the ire of many Chelsea supporters either. The reaction of that night saw the club brief they would pull out of the project, and that was made official in the days after.

Now it is reported that Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona still have hopes of a league with a set of new proposals that could come as soon as the next 24 hours. The key update is rumoured to be that there is an element of promotion and relegation.

Given Chelsea's status in world football, they are sure to be a target of such a project once again.

Regardless of alterations, any proposal is sure to be opposed by the likes of the Premier League and UEFA. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin was forthright with his opinions as new rumours emerge.

Speaking at the Financial Times' Business of Football Summit, Ceferin said: "I am tired of talking about this nonsense.

"First they try to launch during a pandemic, now we hear that they are trying to launch in the middle of a war. Do I have to speak more about these people? They obviously live in a parallel world.

"While we are saving players together with other stakeholders, while we are working to help in a terrible situation, they work on a project like that.

"Honestly speaking, they can pay whoever they want to write that this is a nice project, that they are full of solidarity and give some charity to small clubs. This is a complete nonsense and everybody except them knows it.

"One of them even called me after and apologised. Now they go again. To them fans are customers, for us fans are fans. It is interesting that they are criticising UEFA and ECA, one of them (Gianni Agnelli) was chairman of the ECA. Fans aren't important to them as fans launched a petition, they don't care about that.

"Let me just say that they can play their own competition, nobody forbids them that. But if they play their own competition they cannot play our competition."

In the immediate aftermath of the last incarnation, it would appear that Abramovich was caught off guard. The club was naive not to foresee the fire then, and anybody now would be negligent not to approach any new scheme in a different way.

In April, the club acknowledged that issues on sporting merit should have been addressed ahead of joining the European Super League, and that involving the club in the proposal was a decision the owner and board 'deeply regret'.

For many however, that was not the only issue. While any new owner of Chelsea may not want to empty their pockets to fund the club, the temptation to jump at the financial incentives of a Super League should be met with trepidation.

The likes of Todd Boehly and Hansjorg Wyss should consider this if their consortium proves successful. The possibility their deal could be announced on Monday proves how quickly football can move, and how quickly an opinion may be formed of them.

They should strive to live up to the promises made on sporting merit from the current administration, and learn from the mistakes made. Supporters should be consulted on whether they want to join the league at all.

There is an easy opportunity to get fans to welcome the new custodians, but there's also an easy opportunity to develop a swift rift.
