Todd Boehly aims to copy Shiekh Mansour and Man City with Graham Potter Chelsea ploy

It's fair to say that not many Chelsea supporters and rival fans have not expected certain elements of the Todd Boehly Chelsea tenure.

From the hap-hazardous spending in his first summer as sporting director to the brutal sacking of Champions League winning boss Thomas Tuchel, Boehly certainly hasn't failed to make his mark on English football, four months into his new regime post-Roman Abramovich. The likes of Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and many others have mocked, intimidated and even questioned the part-LA Dodgers owner and his credentials to have the ability to know how to operate in English football.

However, he has already silenced these doubts with a series of moves made on his behalf, including the ambitious spending in the first transfer window and the smart and intelligent appointment of Graham Potter on a five-year contract to front up this new project. Boehly had to pay £20million plus in compensation to ensure that the Brighton manager was available to lead this new project, coupled with the five staff he dragged with him from the South Coast.

With that acquisition in the bag and with the meant-to-be Gareth Southgate heir now having time to adapt and instil his methods for a few days following the cancellation of the Premier League this weekend, Boehly can now move onto more off-the-field matters that can be attended to too.

Not only does a new sporting director need to be instilled before the 2023 January transfer window, but a new scouting network needs to be in place following the departure of Scott MacLachlan. Instead of just finding a like-for-like replacement for the Blues' head of international scouting, Boehly has a Man City-like plan that he hopes will satisfy Potter in the long-term.

As per The Sun, the American tycoon is keen to copy City football group by setting up a network of feeder clubs, and from there, Chelsea will cherry-pick the best young talent from abroad or the academy and send them off to their subsidiary to put their skills to the test.

Another report from the Daily Mail indicates that Tom Glick, Chelsea's president of business, is expected to build Chelsea's structure, and there will be an elevated role for data.

It's a very American approach, but it's one that has worked in different ways for Premier League title regulars Man City and Liverpool in recent years, with Sheikh Mansour and FSG have similar, but at the same time, different approaches to generating their success on and off the field.

Tuchel's successor had a system at Brighton which allowed them to sign unknown and unproven European talent on the cheap, but Potter's coaching credentials meant he could turn someone like Moises Caicedo or Yves Bissouma into a top-class talent. Chelsea's plan is to provide a similar structure but with. more monetary backing.
