Today’s Interview: Governor’s School for the Arts is accepting applications

The Governor’s School for the Arts is accepting applications from Kentucky high school students for the 2023 summer program. G-S-A is a tuition free program that lets students spend three weeks on a college campus learning about art fields that interest them.

Nick Covault is the executive director for the Governor’s School for the Arts. In an interview with WEKU, he said they look for students who are about halfway through their high school careers.

“So applications are open to Kentucky high school students who are currently in the sophomore and their junior year. You can apply in either year and that means students attend the program the summer before their junior or senior year.”

Covault said the program does more than just teach students about the arts.

“Along with that arts education experience comes equally powerful, if not sometimes more powerful benefits like learning independence in terms of being on a college campus for the first time and understanding what the college experience could be like and getting a head start on that.”

Covault said G-S-A has nine different artforms that students can choose to focus on during the program. Those include, dance, film and photography, musical theater, and vocal music.

The director says the application process does take some work so students should not wait until the deadline to apply. That deadline is January 8th.
