Wordle took the world by storm some months back and quickly spawned a wave of imitators. One of the most successful of those is Heardle, which is essentially a game of Name That Tune you can play once per day.

For the uninitiated, here’s how Heardle works. You get six guesses to name that day’s song. You’ll only hear the first second at the outset. After each incorrect answer or a skip, you’ll get to hear a little more of the song. For the last guess, you’ll get to hear the first 16 seconds. The songs so far have run the gamut of genres and decades. Yesterday’s, for instance, was “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones.

In case today’s song has you stumped, I’ve got the answer. I’ll give some hints before revealing the solution then talk a little about the song.

Be warned, there are spoilers ahead.

The clues work in this order: genre, year of release, how it performed on the charts and finally another piece of trivia.

Here are today’s Heardle hints for Tuesday, April 26:

  1. This is listed as an R&B/funk/go-go song on Wikipedia.
  2. It was released in 2005.
  3. It reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top five in the UK singles chart.
  4. It samples a recording of a song called “Oh, Calcutta!” by The Meters.

Still stumped? Can’t quite place the name of the song?

This is your last warning before I reveal the answer.

Heardle #60 Answer For April 26

Today’s Heardle answer is “1 Thing” by Amerie.

"1 Thing" was a hit for Amerie in the mid-2000s. Heardle

This one tripped me up for a moment. That opening beat is instantly recognizable to folks of a certain age.

However, I typed “One Thing” into the answer box at first. The autocomplete didn’t recognize that formatting, so it wasn’t listed among the options. I wrote “Thing” and then the correct answer popped up.

This was a fun one. I haven’t heard or thought about that song in a long time, but it’s super catchy. A real blast from the past that I have definitely danced to in clubs back in the day. I was glad to hear it again. I hope you enjoy it too.

Check back tomorrow for the Heardle answer and clues for puzzle 61.
