Tobacco war grows with another reception centre fire

A reception centre in inner Melbourne has gone up in flames in what is believed to be a targeted arson attack.

A blaze broke out at the property on William Street in Brunswick just after 5am on Tuesday.

Detectives are treating the fire as suspicious and believe it to be a targeted attack, Victoria Police said in a statement.

It's being investigated by Taskforce Lunar, a group of specialist police probing more than 30 fires linked to a conflict between crime syndicates over illegal tobacco profits.

A crime scene has been set up around the Brunswick property and an arson chemist was due to attend the scene later on Tuesday.

Any member of the public who saw someone acting suspiciously in the area has been asked to come forward.

It comes less than a week after arsonists torched the Emerald Reception Centre at Thomastown and another venue in Thornbury days before an underworld figure's boxing match.
