To the Manor Born actress Angela Thorne dies as family pay tribute

To the Manor Born actress Angela Thorne has died "peacefully" at her home at the age of 84.

Her family confirmed the tragic news on Monday following her death on Friday June 16.

A statement from her son Rupert said: “The actress Angela Thorne died peacefully at her home on the 16th of June. She was 84 years old.

“She was the beloved wife of Peter Penry Jones, and is survived by her two sons Rupert and Laurie Penry Jones and her grandchildren, Florence, Peter, Giorgio and Delilah. We will all miss her very much.”

The star is best known for her roles in The Human Factor, North Sea Hijack, The BFG and Cold Comfort Farm.

She also played Marjory Frobisher in To the Manor Born between 1979 and 1981 alongside Penelope Keith.

Her acting career began with the Caryl Jenner Children's Theatre. She later appeared in Night Must Fall at Theatre Royal, Windsor.

Angela joined the Ralph Richardson Theatre company at the Haymarket Theatre and played Gloria in You Never Can Tell, Portia in The Merchant of Venice.

The star was even nominated for an Olivier Award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in Anyone for Denis?

She trained at the Guildhall School of Music And Drama on a scholarship.

On TV, she played in BBC One sitcom Three Up, Two Down, the police drama series Heartbeat and the drama series Elizabeth R.

Angela married Peter Penry-Jones in 1967 and they went on to have two sons together.

They acted alongside each other in a few To the Manor Born episodes. However, he sadly died in 2009 after a long battle with bowel cancer.

In 2010, Angela and her son Rupert were featured in an episode of the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are?

She found out her dad William served with the Indian Medical Corps t the Battle of Monte Cassino.

The star was born in Karachi, British India, in 1939, and was born to William and teacher Sylvia. She lived in India for the first five years of her life.
