TKO and Saudi Arabia Eye Launch of Exclusive Boxing League

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and UFC and WWE’s parent company, TKO Group Holdings, are reportedly in advanced talks to create a new boxing league.

The league, according to a report from The New York Times, would showcase “up-and-coming boxers exclusively tied to the league.”

The venture is another sign of Saudi Arabia’s continued push to solidify its position as a major player in global sports entertainment.

Potential Details of the Boxing League

The initiative is said to be spearheaded by Sela, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

If finalised, TKO would serve as the league’s managing partner, with the company being offered an equity stake and a share of the revenue.

Management fees for TKO are estimated to reach $30 million annually, alongside lucrative hosting fees for events in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is expected to contribute significantly to the league’s success by paying more than $40 million in hosting fees for just two fights.

Additional bouts will also be held in the United States and Europe, albeit with comparatively modest hosting fees.

While TKO refrained from confirming the deal, the company stated it would consider “unique and compelling opportunities” that align with its business portfolio.

PIF declined to comment on the matter.

Strengthening Ties Between TKO and Saudi Arabia

This potential collaboration would further strengthen the relationship between TKO’s parent company, Endeavor, and Saudi Arabia.

Relations had soured in 2019 following Endeavor’s decision to return a $400 million investment from the Saudi sovereign wealth fund after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

This prospective boxing league could signal a mending of that strained relationship.

The PIF’s commitment to high-profile sports investments has already reshaped the global sports landscape.

From acquiring stakes in football and golf, to hosting major boxing events, the fund’s involvement continues to draw both intrigue and criticism.

Wider Implications for Boxing and Combat Sports

This venture has the potential to transform boxing as we know it, for better or for worse.

By anchoring significant portions of the league’s schedule in Saudi Arabia, the initiative also aligns with the nation’s Vision 2030 strategy to diversify its economy through entertainment and sports.

The partnership could also provide a blueprint for future collaborations between global corporations and Saudi Arabia’s PIF.

Reports indicate TKO has also engaged in discussions with other Arab nations about expanding the boxing league, suggesting the project could extend its reach beyond Saudi borders.

WWE’s Role in Saudi Arabia’s Sports Vision

In a related development, WWE recently announced that its flagship Royal Rumble event will take place in Saudi Arabia in 2026, further highlighting the nation’s growing influence in combat sports.

TKO’s involvement in both boxing and wrestling reinforces its ambition to dominate the sports entertainment space.
